Pollock sales have soared as consumers become more aware of the species.
Sales of chilled and frozen pollock are up 122% over the past year to 54.9m [pounds sterling] [Nielsen 52w/e 16 May]. It is now the ninth-most popular seafood in the UK behind Rado Watch traditional favourites such as cod, haddock and salmon, according to industry body Seafish.
The profile of pollock has been given a boost recently, with Birds Eye producing on omega-3 branded pollock fish finger and Sainsbury's running a promotion renaming it 'colin'.
Those marketing drives and the introduction of more lines using pollock had made the slightly grey fleshed fish more familiar to consumers, Seafish said.
