How to make money go round
Posted On 09/06/2010 09:11:10

THE credit crunch concerns us all, but one reader offers a beam of hope from a story he picked up in a town in the South of France where everyone was heavily in debt.

A rich Russian arrived at a small hotel, asked for a room and put Designer bridal gowns a 100 Euro note on the reception counter. He took the key and went to inspect the room on the third floor.

The hotel owner took the banknote to his meat supplier to whom he owed EUR100. The butcher took the money and raced to pay his debt to the wholesaler, who rushed to the farmer to pay EUR100 for the pigs he had purchased. The farmer gave the note to his sister who had given him a loan to tide him over a bad patch and the sister paid off the arrears her bill at the hotel, where she resided.

At that moment, the rich Russian came down to reception, said the room was unsatisfactory, took back his EUR100 and left. There was no profit in the transactions but everyone no longer had any debt and the townspeople could look optimistically towards their Glass beads future.

Could this be the solution to the global financial crisis?

ANDY Besant didn't let the grass grow under his feet when he lost his job as a salesman. Within a month he had set up his own business and 36 years later it is still going strong.

"There were very few independent electrical contractors around at the time but lots of the big boys, so having knowledge of the trade I decided go into business with a partner," Andy recalled.

He spent most of his time working in private houses although there was some work in offices and schools. When Andy's wholesaler went bust in 1986 he took over the business on Gloucester Road, Bishopston, and the name Ablectrics went up above the shop door.

Ablectrics, which trades as electrical wholesalers and lighting specialist, now has a turnover nudging half a million pounds. It has a staff of four, one of whom has been on the payroll for 20 years.

Three years ago Andy took his son Fraser, now aged 25, into the business.

"He's really pushing it forward and has gone big on selling energy-saving lights," he said.

The firm makes free on-site visits to firms in Bristol to carry out a survey of their existing lighting.

"We then explain the financial long-term benefits of introducing energy saving lights," said Fraser.

He has also developed a new website enabling customers to order online.

"After gaining a reputation for being a key supplier of lighting, we expanded the premises to build a lighting showroom. With rival lighting shops closing down we quickly became busy. During the past year we have opened over 20 new trade accounts. With another 12 months of growth it's our plan to open another branch," he said.

Fresh food making up a third o
Posted On 09/03/2010 22:00:08

Almost a third of all c-store sales are now fresh food, marking a huge category growth through this channel over the past five years.

C-stores have often been accused of not getting their flesh offer right, but the latest figures from IGD's Evolution of Convenience Retailing report show that UK c-stores sold 8.7bn [pounds sterling] of fresh food and drink last year. This accounts for 29.9% of the total convenience market compared with 23.2% in 2004.

The growth was down to a general trend towards healthier eating and a general improvement in standards, largely driven by the symbol groups, said IGD analyst and report author Stewart Samuel. According to IGD, 2008 was a strong year for the sector in general, with sales growth of 6.1% to 29.1bn [pounds sterling] compared with total grocery, which was up 5.1%. The growth was driven by the symbol groups and the convenience multiples. Symbol group sales were up 7.7% to 10.4bn [pounds sterling], representing a 35.9% share of the convenience market, while their market share grew 0.6%.

The convenience multiples category, which includes Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local, M&S Simply Food and Martin McColl, had the biggest sales increase, up 12.7% to 4.3bn [pounds sterling]. The multiples also grew market share by 0.9% to 14.9%.

Symbol groups had reacted well to the changing economic climate, said Samuel. Wholesale Cufflinks Jewelry "As well as introducing new formats for stores, the symbols have been quick to increase the focus on value lines and improving their own-label ranges." Spar, Musgrave and Landmark had all improved their value offerings in the last year, he added.

However, while sector sales were strong, store numbers continued to fall, according to the report, compiled with William Reed Business Media, publisher of The Grocer.

Total c-store numbers fell 1.6% to 48,751. Non-affiliated independents were most affected, with the number of stores falling 5% to 21,950. Symbols were up 2% to 14,630 while the number of multiples grew 8% to 2,812.

From Bourbon Street to Fountai
Posted On 09/03/2010 22:00:03

In New Orleans, elaborate parades, masks, beads and more rule for the days leading up to Fat Tuesday, and one local business is bringing that flavor to Main Avenue.

The 440 Main Restaurant and Micki's on Main Bar & Grill will once again bring Bourbon Street to Fountain Square, letting the good times roll with a special New Orleans menu, live music and, of course, hurricanes.

"It's just full of fun," said Micki Holmes who owns 440 and Micki's with her husband, Tom. "It's something for Bowling Green to look forward to in the middle of winter."

The restaurant's decor is reminiscent of Mardi Gras, with purple, green and gold napkins and banners and large masks adorning the walls. Tom Holmes said they have 17,000 sets of beads ordered from New Orleans specifically for the event.

A special Mardi Gras menu has been put into play at 440 Main, one that Tom Holmes said is "infused with Louisiana flavor."

In addition to the favorites that everyone likes on the menu, Micki Holmes said there will also be blackened red fish, stuffed prawns and bourbon-glazed smoked duck.

Turtle soup, frog legs and Louisiana oysters on the half-shell will also be on the menu, along with a traditional ratatouille and andouille pudding as side dishes. Meals will be topped off with a white chocolate pecan bread pudding and Bananas Foster for desert.

All the specials will be available for dinner today through Tuesday, which is Fat Tuesday.

The event also will feature live music with Venus 12 playing today, the Tyronne Dunn Experiment on Friday, Ernie Small Blues Band on Saturday and Somethin' Fierce on Tuesday.

Music will begin at 8 p.m. each night, except Saturday, when Ernie Small will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Dog Id Tags

"We usually get the bands that people enjoy the most," Tom Holmes said.

This is the 11th year the restaurant has hosted a Mardi Gras celebration, which has grown, Tom Holmes said. When it started, Micki Holmes said only a handful of people showed up.

"Now it's so neat to see people come in with their own masks and their own beads," she said. "It's just become a special celebration here on (Fountain Square)."

New Orleans influence has been in Bowling Green for more than 100 years, Micki Holmes said. She said a train here once had a Dog Tag Necklaces regular run to the city. As natives of New Orleans, Tom Holmes said the idea behind Mardi Gras is to get all the partying in before Fat Tuesday, because the next day, Ash Wednesday, "you have to repent and give up your sins for 40 days during Lent."

"It's just who we are," Micki Holmes said. "There's been a cajun influence here for a long time, and I guess you can say we want to keep that tradition going."

Whatever happened to consumer
Posted On 09/01/2010 21:48:21

Over the past 10 years we have seen an ever-increasing stream of legislation targeted at improving the health of the nation.

We've had the FSA's controversial traffic-light labelling scheme, which has generated huge media coverage, demonised the food industry and antagonised supermarkets--yet despite the future, a sensible model has still not been agreed upon and consumers remain confused.

We've had rising levels of taxation on tobacco--yet the government and health lobby are still not happy and now tobacco retailers face the prospect of a display ban.

Chanel Watch Replica

And next up there's the proposal for a 'fat tax' on chocolate. Once again, manufacturers and brand owners are in the dock because of the way products are marketed and promoted - yet can chocolate really be blamed for the obesity problem in the UK?

Ironically, some of the initiatives surrounding the sale of these products either already have failed or will fail primarily because of consumer choice. Choice is the fundamental right of a consumer in a free society and we shouldn't allow a government to tell us what we can and cannot buy.

Don't get me wrong. I am all for Hip Hop Caps a healthier nation and I applaud the work the government has done in schools to educate children about the dangers of smoking, drinking and poor nutrition.

What I object to, however, is the effort put into 'nannying' the populace with a constant flow of confusing legislation that will also do serious damage to wholesale and retail businesses.

The average adult is intelligent enough to know that an apple is healthier than a Mars bar. Everyone now understands that smoking and heavy drinking are bad for you.

While there will always be those who choose to abuse their bodies, equally, most of us understand the notion of moderation. Educating the young to make sensible choices is the right route--dictating to adults is not.

Obviously I am biased. Our network of 60 delivered wholesale depots specialises in the impulse category that incorporates confectionery and tobacco.

However, in this fever to control the nation's health, I am sure MPs really Evening do not understand the detrimental effect that existing and proposed legislation will have on both the grocery market and the individual's right to choose.

Ultimately we have to be realistic and our strategic view is that, despite the lobbying of our trade bodies, such as the FWD, the legislation may, in one form or another, be here to stay.

If politics demand that legislation is inevitable, by all means lobby parliament to make amendments where they are most needed--but it is crucial that we collectively strive to minimise its effects by seeking out the opportunities available despite the most onerous changes that legislation will bring.

So I would suggest that we regard any impending legislation as a worst-case scenario and devise a strategy in the light of its implementation. What we cannot afford to do is sit back and take the consequences.

We must take action wherever and whenever we can and exercise our right, and the right of all consumers, to make a choice.

Wheat price remains high
Posted On 09/01/2010 21:48:18

SANA'A, Jan. 18 -- Although the price of wheat has dropped almost 60 percent on the international level since early 2008, Yemeni importers and wholesalers are creating price hikes to increase their profits, say retailers.

Last week, the price of wheat witnessed an unjustified increase. In two weeks, the price of a 50-kilo sack of wheat has increased from YR 4,200 to almost YR 6,000, four times its price in 2007. People accuse the government of carelessness and of not taking strict measures against powerful merchants who play with the price of this important commodity. Whereas four decades ago Yemen produced enough wheat to feed itself, the country now depends on imports for 90 percent of the wheat it consumes. In remote villages, the high price of food has led families to regularly skip meals and spend over two-thirds of their income on food, forcing some to pull children out of school because they cannot afford it, according to a recent assessment by the World Food Program.

Economist Mustafa Nasr, director of the Center for Studies and Economic Media Center, explains that wheat prices have decreased globally because of both the decrease of the price of oil and the great production of wheat after the global food crisis in 2008.

"What is going on in Yemen is that importers do not release high quantities of wheat onto the markets, which increases its price," he stated.

"Those who have the monopoly on this commodity raise its price, and the government turns a blind eye," said a trader with inside knowledge of the market.

Retailers blame wholesalers of holding a monopoly on the commodity and of raising its prices at will.

"Increases of wheat prices are because of wholesaler's monopolization of food commodities such as wheat, flour and sugar," said Hamid Al-Ruzaiqi, foodstuff retailer.

He explained that the price of a 50-kilo sack of sugar has risen from YR 4,700 to 5,500 now it is 5,200, while the price of a 50- kilo sack of wheat has risen from 3,700 to 6,200 now it is 5,500 and the price of a 50-kilo sack of flour has therefore increased from 4,100 to 5,500 now it is 5,200.

"The best kind of wheat, the Australian one, is withheld from the market so that's its price can be increased." he stated. He accuses the state of not controlling the markets.

Hip Hop Stud Earrings

"The country is careless because it does not fix suitable prices for commodities and does not punish merchants who play with prices," added Al-Ruzaiqi.

"The hike in the wheat prices is mostly tied to the very cold weather conditions as many areas in the world where wheat grows have witnessed snow," said deputy chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Sana'a Mohammad Salah.

The price of wheat will return to its previous low levels and maybe less, he said. He warned consumers not to buy great quantities of wheat because its price will decrease during the forthcoming days.

Salah indicated that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is closely following up domestic and global prices of wheat, assuring the coming agricultural seasons will bring good news.

For their part, wholesalers directly blame importers for fixing high prices in order to better sell the grain.

Profits creep ahead at SSE des
Posted On 08/31/2010 12:22:23

Byline: PETER RANSCOMBE

ANOTHER busy week for corporate news sees results from Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE), Vodafone, Marks & Spencer and British Airways.

SSE will announce a "modest" increase in profits at the firm's annual results on Thursday. Analysts at Deutsche Bank expect the company to post underlying profits of about GBP 1.25 billion for the year to the end of March - up marginally from the previous year's GBP 1.23bn.

The group has cut electricity and gas prices by 9 per cent and 4 per cent respectively as suppliers across the board responded to easing wholesale costs, although the cuts are far smaller than the heavy hikes imposed last year.

Although the latest reductions will not affect this week's figures, the City will keep an eye on the outlook for the current year.

Deutsche Bank's Iain Turner said: "Margins in energy retail should be improving due to lower wholesale gas and power prices, while spreads in generation will likely be declining."

Marks & Spencer chief Sir Stuart Rose won plaudits last week for his gracious climb-down in the "storm in a D-cup" over its pricing of bigger bras, but financial figures will take centre stage tomorrow.

The high street giant posted a profit of GBP 1bn only a year ago but 12 months on this seems like a distant memory. Analysts are expecting profits for the year to the end of March down some 40 per cent at GBP 603 million - with prospects for the current trading year little better.

Problems with the firm's food business, as consumers shunned its dearer goods, also combined with the bleak retail climate to give M&S some self-imposed headaches this year.

M&S added to the gloom by announcing 1,200 job cuts under plans to shut 25 Simply Food outlets and two main stores in January. But Rose gave signs of hope in March's update with a smaller than expected fall in sales.

Bosses at oil giant Shell could face a tricky meeting with investors tomorrow with recent pay awards under scrutiny.

At least two voting advisory firms have recommended that investors throw out Shell's remuneration report owing to the huge pay-outs it has made under its long-term incentive plan (LTIP) despite missing targets.

Despite record GBP 22bn profits last year on soaring oil prices, the firm was ranked fourth out of five for its performance against peers BP, US firms Chevron and ExxonMobil and France's Total.

Shell Clasps

This should have meant no share awards were made under the group's LTIP, but Shell's remuneration committee decided the difference between third and fourth place was "marginal".

The committee decided the ranking "did not fully reflect Shell's relative performance" and released half the shares that directors would have been entitled to for the 2006-8 period under the scheme.

Flagship carrier British Airways is set to hit shareholders on Friday with annual operating losses of about GBP 150m. The company's figures for the year to 31 March will bear the scars of soaring fuel costs last summer as well as the impact of a deepening recession in the autumn.

Prospects for the current financial year are little brighter as BA is expecting operating losses of a similar size, and is looking to squeeze costs across the group.

Scottish wholesaler and retailer CJ Lang & Son's profits fell by 135,000 [pounds sterling] in the year to April 2008, according to results posted at Companies House.

Despite a 2.8% increase in turnover to 255.4m [pounds sterling], Mens Hip Hop Earrings the company's pre-tax profits dropped to 4.9m [pounds sterling].

The accounts, posted this week, show the profit decline was caused by increasing sales, administration and distribution costs.

Meanwhile, the company has completed a 6.4m [pounds sterling] extension to a distribution centre in Dundee after nearly two years of work.
